This research paper investigates how various forest management techniques can bolster fire resilience in the young, post-fire plantations of California's Sierra Nevada. By using the Forest Vegetation Simulator to model a century of stand development, the authors compare the effectiveness of overstory thinning, mastication, and prescribed burning across different planting arrangements. The study reveals that while thinning effectively reduces crown fire risk by lowering canopy density, the most significant improvements in long-term survival occur when mastication is combined with prescribed fire to eliminate surface fuels. This document serves as a strategic guide for land managers, emphasizing that active silvicultural intervention is essential to transitioning vulnerable juvenile stands into fire-resistant mature forests.
