This document examines how mastication influences fire behavior and ecological health. By comparing fine and coarse debris across laboratory and field settings, the study found that while these fuelbeds generally result in lower flame intensity, they also trigger extended smoldering that can increase smoke and soil heating. The authors conclude that coarse mastication is more cost-effective than fine processing because it achieves similar fire reduction results with less labor. This document also highlights that while intense fires can stunt tree growth, low-intensity burns improve tree defenses against bark beetles by increasing resin duct size.
