Mulching Productivity in Black Spruce Fuels - Productivity as a Function of Treatment Intensity

This technical report evaluates how different mulching treatment intensities affect machine efficiency and the composition of wildfire fuel beds in black spruce stands. By comparing low, normal, and high-intensity processing, the study seeks to help land managers balance the economic costs of mechanized clearing with the physical effectiveness of fire risk reduction. Key findings suggest that while higher intensity typically slows production, stand characteristics like tree diameter and density significantly influence overall productivity. This document provides a foundation for developing cost-effective mulching prescriptions that can predictably alter wildfire behavior near at-risk communities.
