FRDA Juvenile Height Growth of Four Species on Four Sites in the CWHb1 Variant

This FRDA Report #007 analyzes the juvenile height growth of four major tree species including Douglas-fir, Sitka spruce, western hemlock, and western redcedar across diverse environmental conditions on Vancouver Island. By tracking 26 years of data, the researchers developed site-specific growth curves to help foresters predict timber yield and evaluate the health of young plantations. The study concludes that Douglas-fir consistently outperformed the other species in height, while factors such as salal competition and spruce weevil damage significantly hindered the progress of its counterparts. This document serves as a practical guide for species selection and reforestation strategy, providing a baseline for comparing early stand performance within the coastal British Columbia ecosystem.
