FRDA Field Assessment of Inverted Humus Mounds Produced by Three Site Preparation Implements in North Central British Columbia

This FRDA Report #008 details a field assessment of inverted humus mounds created by three different mechanical implements across four locations in North Central British Columbia. By comparing equipment including the Sinkkila HMF scarifier, the Ministry mounder, and the Bracke mounder, the study evaluates how effectively each machine prepares soil for future tree planting by layering mineral soil over organic matter. The study analyzes mound dimensions and capping depth, concluding that while the Ministry mounder was the most consistently successful, factors like equipment malfunction and site-specific soil conditions significantly influenced the quality of the planting sites. This research serves as a guide for foresters to select the most appropriate site preparation implements to enhance seedling survival and growth.
