FRDA an All-Season Container and Bareroot Planting Trial of Lodgepole Pine and White Spruce - 14 Year Results

This FRDA Report #004 details a long-term comparative study conducted in British Columbia to evaluate the survival and growth of Lodgepole Pine and White Spruce. By examining three different stock types, including bareroot and container-grown seedlings, planted across six different months, researchers sought to determine if the traditional planting season could be effectively extended throughout the entire frost-free period. The findings, based on fourteen years of data, reveal that while spruce generally survived better and pine grew taller, the PSB-211 container stock consistently outperformed other methods across all planting dates. This report provides a scientific framework for optimizing reforestation strategies by demonstrating how specific seedling varieties can maintain high success rates even when planted outside of the standard spring window.
