Forest Fuel Treatment Efficacy in BC Two Case Studies - Thinning and Broadcast Burning

This document evaluates the efficacy of forest fuel treatments across British Columbia by examining how thinned areas and broadcast burn sites interacted with actual wildfires. By employing a case study approach and paired-plot field measurements, the researchers assessed whether interventions like debris disposal and canopy thinning successfully modified fire behavior, such as reducing crown involvement and tree mortality. The findings suggest that while thinning and ladder fuel removal generally produced positive results, many treatments were strategically undersized or poorly located to provide significant suppression advantages at a landscape level.
