An Operational Comparison of Partial Cut and Clearcut Harvesting Methods in Old Cedar-Hemlock Forests in Central British Columbia

This document evaluates the efficiency and economic viability of alternative harvesting methods within the old-growth forests of British Columbia. By comparing ground-based clearcutting, cable clearcutting, and group selection treatments, the authors demonstrate that clearcutting remains the most cost-effective system, but partial cutting serves as a necessary but more expensive tool for meeting ecological and social objectives. The study highlights that internal timber decay and complex terrain significantly inflate operational costs, particularly in systems requiring intensive planning and layout.
