This document investigates how leaving different amounts of mature tree cover during timber harvests affects the development of newly replanted Douglas-fir in coastal British Columbia. By comparing various levels of dispersed retention, ranging from clearcuts to 30% forest cover, the researchers tracked the height, diameter, and survival rates of young trees over a 5-6 year period. The results demonstrated that while most lower retention levels did not hinder early growth, a statistically significant reduction in stem diameter occurred at the 30% retention level, likely due to decreased light availability. This document suggests that while higher levels of forest structure may slightly slow development, young Douglas-fir can remain resilient and viable under moderate levels of overstory shade.

This document serves as a practical guide for forest managers in British Columbia's Coast Forest Region. Its primary purpose is to help conserve and maintain suitable winter habitat for Roosevelt elk while simultaneously ensuring successful conifer regeneration. This document details crucial aspects like habitat features, risks associated with forestry activities such as road building and timber harvesting, and various silvicultural strategies to mitigate elk browse damage to young trees. By summarizing extensive research and expert discussions, this document provides foresters with the necessary information to balance wildlife conservation with timber production goals.

This document outlines how to integrate wildfire risk reduction into forest regeneration practices. It explains that these standards are modifications of existing reforestation guidelines, tailored to achieve specific fire management objectives, such as reducing crown fire potential and enhancing fire suppression effectiveness, particularly near communities and high-value infrastructure. The document details considerations for developing these standards, including species selection based on fire resilience, stand density management to influence fire behavior, and structural characteristics like canopy base height. It provides a framework and examples for forest professionals to create stocking standards that balance timber production with proactive wildfire management at both local and landscape levels.
