This technical report summarizes nearly three decades of research from Experimental Project 964, a large-scale study investigating how planting density influences the development of four major conifer species in British Columbia. By evaluating 17 different sites over 16 to 26 years, the authors analyze the critical trade-offs between individual tree size and total timber yield per hectare. The findings reveal that higher densities maximize total wood volume and biomass and lower densities produce thicker trees with less taper, though vertical height growth remains largely unaffected across all treatments. This document serves as a guide for forest managers to select optimal stocking levels based on specific commercial goals, such as high-value lumber production versus biomass for carbon credits.

This document summarizes the long-term results of pre-commercial thinning experiments on lodgepole pine in the British Columbia interior. Researchers have tracked eleven distinct trials across various sites and ages to determine how reducing stand density influences future growth and yield. The study highlights that while thinning significantly increases individual-tree diameter and volume, it also results in lower net stand basal area and total volume compared to unthinned control plots. This document serves as a data source for calibrating growth models and informs forest managers on how different spacing intensities affect tree development and potential merchantable yields.

This FRDA Report #066 is an extensive information review regarding the complexities of managing hardwood timber resources, specifically aspen and poplar species, in northeastern British Columbia. The document organizes these challenges into 12 priority areas, highlighting the need for addressing outdated inventory and resolving land use conflict as the most urgent concerns. The review systematically synthesizes existing literature on topics ranging from stocking standards and growth projections to regeneration, soil erosion, and gene conservation. This document is intended to guide forestry practices toward the more effective utilization and management of the boreal hardwood ecosystem in the region.
