This document serves as a comprehensive manual for commercial thinning within the province of British Columbia, detailing how to manage intermediate harvests where the wood removed covers extraction costs. The text outlines a multi-level strategy that integrates strategic planning at the landscape level with specific stand selection criteria, such as windfirmness, tree stability, and forest health. Its primary purpose is to offer practitioners a framework for using thinning as a strategic management tool to increase wood flow flexibility, enhance timber value, and protect non-timber resource values like biodiversity and visual landscapes. Furthermore, the guidelines establish strict administrative and legal requirements under the Forest Practices Code, mandating detailed silviculture prescriptions and rigorous post-harvest assessments to monitor soil disturbance and residual tree damage.

Fuels Patterns and a Fire Following Mountain Pine Beetle Mortality in the Climax Lodgepole Pine Forests of Southern Central Oregon

This webinar explores the relationship between mountain pine beetle outbreaks and subsequent wildfire behavior within the lodgepole pine ecosystems of South Central Oregon. Researchers detail a chrono-sequence study and an assessment of the Pole Creek Fire to challenge the conventional assumption that beetle-killed forests inevitably lead to more catastrophic burns. Findings reveal that while active crown fires can still occur, higher prior beetle mortality often results in lower fire severity under extreme weather conditions due to a reduction in available canopy fuels. The webinar characterizes these disturbances as a natural cycle where native insects and fire interact to create landscape heterogeneity and promote long-term ecosystem resilience.

This document is a literature review for British Columbia focusing on the relationship between tree wounding and partial-cut harvesting practices. The primary purpose is to provide a consolidated reference on tree damage, wood-decaying fungi, and the resulting losses. The document details the physical response of trees to injury, introducing concepts like compartmentalization of decay in trees, which explains how trees attempt to wall off damage. The document explores how harvesting activities, particularly logging injuries to residual trees, create entry points for various wound parasites and true heartrots, with the severity of decay being strongly influenced by factors like wound size and age, and the location of the injury.

This document serves as a comprehensive manual for forest professionals, outlining best practices for thinning operations effective April 2025. Its primary purpose is to support sustainable forest management by providing science-based guidelines for developing and implementing thinning prescriptions, particularly for enhancing timber production and quality. The guidance emphasizes maintaining ecological and social objectives while focusing on operational efficiency, minimizing environmental impacts, and promoting innovative approaches. It also details the required data collection and monitoring processes to ensure the effectiveness and compliance of thinning activities, thereby fostering healthy, resilient forest ecosystems across British Columbia.
