This document details a study evaluating alternative silvicultural systems designed to improve the reforestation of spruce-dominated boreal mineral wetlands in Alberta. Researchers compared narrow alternating strip-cuts and patch clear-cuts against uncut forest controls to determine which method best mitigates the common challenges of excessive waterlogging and competitive grass ingress. The findings indicate that the strip-cut system provided a superior microclimate and higher seedling survival rates, particularly for white spruce planted on mounded microsites. This study concludes that prompt postharvest site preparation and the partial retention of the overstory are essential for successful, long-term conifer regeneration on these sensitive, wet sites.

Silvicultural Options for Young Growth Douglas-Fir Forests - the Capitol Forest Study Establishment and First Results

This document summarizes the early findings of a multidisciplinary study in Washington's Capitol Forest, which evaluates six different silvicultural regimes ranging from traditional clearcutting to group selection and untreated controls on an operational scale. By managing young-growth Douglas-fir stands for multiple objectives, researchers aim to provide forest managers with quantitative data on the biological, financial, and social consequences of various timber harvest patterns. Key themes include the comparative costs and feasibility of implementing these systems, the physical impact on soil and regeneration, and the public's aesthetic response to different landscape conditions. This study seeks to identify management options that can sustain high timber yields while simultaneously enhancing wildlife habitat and visual appeal to meet modern societal expectations.

Alternatives to Clearcutting in BC Coastal Montane Forests

This paper details the establishment and early findings of the Montane Alternative Silvicultural Systems partnership, formed to investigate alternatives to clearcutting in the high-elevation old-growth forests of Vancouver Island. The study compares the operational costs and biological impacts of Uniform Shelterwood, Green Tree Retention, and Patch Cuttings to traditional clearcutting and an old-growth control. Initial results highlight differences in harvesting expenses, windthrow, site disturbance, nutrient cycling, understory vegetation response, and coniferous regeneration, emphasizing the complexity of balancing timber harvesting with ecological sustainability in these montane ecosystems.
