Out On A Limb is a series that uplifts trailblazers in BC communities who are leading innovative management practices for the betterment of the forests of tomorrow. In this episode of Out on a Limb, the SIP joins Harrop-Procter Community Forest to learn about their innovative approach to anticipate and adapt to climate change impacts. Harrop-Procter CF has spent the past 15 years adapting their forest management approach to respond to climate change impacts on their forest and surrounding landscape. Using a risk assessment approach, they are able to identify areas with varying risk to climate change and prioritize management actions. Erik Leslie, Forest Manager at Harrop-Procter, unpacks the three types of Operations Strategies he employs using his climate adaptation framework: Resistance, Resilience, and Transition. the SIP joins him in the field to visit three sites where these strategies have resulted in specific treatments to make the site either resistant, resilient, or completely transitioned on a new trajectory. Erik shows us how managers can integrate climate science and risk assessment into practical forestry decision making.

Silvicultural Options for Young Growth Douglas-Fir Forests - the Capitol Forest Study Establishment and First Results

This document summarizes the early findings of a multidisciplinary study in Washington's Capitol Forest, which evaluates six different silvicultural regimes ranging from traditional clearcutting to group selection and untreated controls on an operational scale. By managing young-growth Douglas-fir stands for multiple objectives, researchers aim to provide forest managers with quantitative data on the biological, financial, and social consequences of various timber harvest patterns. Key themes include the comparative costs and feasibility of implementing these systems, the physical impact on soil and regeneration, and the public's aesthetic response to different landscape conditions. This study seeks to identify management options that can sustain high timber yields while simultaneously enhancing wildlife habitat and visual appeal to meet modern societal expectations.

This document investigates the prevalence of logging damage and subsequent fungal decay in young true fir forests within Northern California. By comparing traditional harvesting methods to specialized thinning techniques, the authors demonstrate that intentional precautions can significantly lower the rate of injury to remaining trees. Through tree-dissection studies, the researchers established that the age and surface area of wounds are the primary predictors of wood volume loss, as every observed injury was found to be infected with rot. This document also provides mathematical equations to estimate merchantable volume loss alongside practical preventative recommendations, such as restricting the logging season and pre-planning skid trails. This document aims to help foresters minimize injury-related decay and ensure the long-term productivity of thinned timber stands.
