The authors outline a framework of five extension forms, ranging from one-way sharing to co-produced knowledge generation, designed to help foresters adapt to modern pressures such as climate change, wildfire severity, and the legal recognition of Indigenous Rights and Title. By reviewing the history of extension, this document acknowledges the field's colonial and anti-Indigenous origins while advocating for a future grounded in reciprocity and ethical collaboration. This document serves as a call to action for organizations to formally value and resource extension staff, ensuring that stewardship practices are effectively informed by a diverse range of social, economic, and ecological values. -
Tamm Review - a Meta-Analysis of Thinning Prescribed Fire and Wildfire Effects on Subsequent Wildfire Severity in Conifer Dominated Forests of the Western US

By synthesizing decades of empirical data, the researchers demonstrate that combining mechanical thinning with prescribed burning is the most effective defense, reducing subsequent fire severity by up to 72%. The study highlights a hierarchy in treatment efficacy and notes that addressing surface fuels is essential since thinning alone proved significantly less reliable at preventing high-severity burns. Furthermore, while these treatments remain robust under diverse weather conditions, their protective benefits diminish over time, typically halving in effectiveness after a decade. -
Stand-Level Fuel Reduction Treatments and Fire Behaviour in Canadian Boreal Conifer Forests

The authors document how traditional management standards aim to disrupt wildfire combustion by increasing the distance between trees and elevating the canopy. They note that these methods often result in unnatural forest structures that are difficult to evaluate using existing fire behavior models. By synthesizing modeling frameworks and empirical observations from both experimental and wildfires, the research demonstrates that while treatments generally succeed under moderate weather conditions, they may fail during extreme wind and spread rates. The document concludes by identifying critical gaps in current knowledge, emphasizing the need to better manage surface fuel loads and to integrate active fire suppression strategies into the initial design of fuel treatments. -
Modeling Juvenile Stand Development and Fire Risk of Post-Fire Planted Forests Under Variations in Thinning and Fuel Treatments Using FVS FFE

By using the Forest Vegetation Simulator to model a century of stand development, the authors compare the effectiveness of overstory thinning, mastication, and prescribed burning across different planting arrangements. The study reveals that while thinning effectively reduces crown fire risk by lowering canopy density, the most significant improvements in long-term survival occur when mastication is combined with prescribed fire to eliminate surface fuels. This document serves as a strategic guide for land managers, emphasizing that active silvicultural intervention is essential to transitioning vulnerable juvenile stands into fire-resistant mature forests. -
Effective Actions for Managing Rsilient High Elevation Five-Needle White Pine Forests in Western North America at Multiple Scales Under Changing Climates

The authors advocate for multi-scaled management interventions to promote resilience to disturbances and genetic resistance to white pine blister rust. The paper details the critical need for long-term programs like inventory, mapping, and research, alongside active restoration treatments such as mechanical cuttings and prescribed fires, and proactive tree-level measures like planting rust-resistant seedlings and protecting high-value trees, all while integrating climate change considerations throughout the planning and implementation process.
